I will be in Durango for a couple of days next week with my camera gear. I will be coming from Monument Valley/Mesa Verde so will have enough rocks and ruins. What would be some good photo subjects in the Durango area?
Go north, young lady.
Take Hwy. 550 north out of Durango toward Silverton and then up to Ouray, where you'll cross three mountain passes over 10,000 ft. in 70 miles, and you'll be driving along one of the most beautiful highways in America. Photo ops abound along that road! Far too many to describe here, but you'll know 'em when you see 'em.
Driving back to Durango from Ouray will afford you even more photo ops that you may have missed on the first pass and/or under better light.
The Silverton Narrow Gauge trains leave a couple of times in the morning then they return in the late afternoon. Part of their route parallels Hwy 550 north of Durango.

I second John's recommendation. The La Plata Mountains are also nice if you want something a little closer, though this requires 4wd.
