Ned Fenimore and I met for an outing at Wooden Shoe Tulip Fest on Monday, 4/23. This was my first time at Wooden Shoe, and Ned said it had been about 8 or 9 years since he last went there. We were both surprised by the crowd of people at 9 a.m., and the masses swelled from there! Still, we were able to get out in the field away from most of the commotion. We had a great time in the sea of color challenging each other to try new things. Ned showed me how he picks his pairs, and I showed him about cramming. The Poodle supervised everything, when he wasn’t trying to crowd into a small shady spot to evade the 85° sunshine. Who knew it would suddenly and briefly become mid-summer! We both filled up our cards, had a fun time and came home with a start on a tan.

Nice assortment of colors, Catherine. I wasn't aware that you and Ned were out at the Wooden Shoe on Monday. I was out there also. Arrived at about 9:30. Since I've never met you and Ned before, I wouldn't know who to say hi to. There were a lot of cameras out and about that day. Did you get any shots of the tulips that were a deep purple (almost black)? I tried a few, but didn't like the lighting on them.
Oh, darn! Don, I'm sorry we missed you. The Outing was posted under the "Outings" header (see top of page). This is a new system we're all getting used to. Please will you, and anyone else, comment and suggest how we can make meeting up for outings easier-- easier to find the announcements and posts, easier to reply/rsvp, etc. Otherwise keep a photographer's eye on the Outings board for fun shooting opportunities with your fellow PNWNP'ers!
And do please post some of your shots in the Tulip Challenge IMAGES thread (in the sticky thread section)!
Here's a couple more shots: The light was really radical, so rather than do much landscape work, we did more closeups and when possible used a diffuser panel or caught a couple minutes of more filtered light as some clouds occasionally passed over.
This is a group of tulips that Ned and I picked as our favorite on the day. At first bloom, they are more of a yellow-orange and then mature into a peachy-pink-orange.
Then, as I said, one of the things we did: Ned showed me how to pick good pairs of flowers, and I showed him how to "cram." Here is an example of the result:
Hopefully, when Ned gets back from Vegas, he'll post some shots, too. He (as usual!) made gorgeous images.

Lovely takes, Catherine.. I really like this last one of yours. It really turned out well! Thanks for accompanying me both days - I had a lot of fun, despite the sunburn that is now peeling pretty badly!
