Keeping a healthy distance
The afternoon was very quiet, so an hour in we decided to deploy the aluminium skiff knowing we would find the pod of hippos that frequented the channels. Once we found them within 15-20 minutes they settled down and excepted us, but still keeping a comfortable distance between both parties, although this guy was only making a token jesture.

Yes, I think I'd keep a healthy distance as well. Great shot, Steve. I don't recall seeing a hippo's tongue like that before!

Brilliant shot!! I'd love to see a shot like this in 3D - a lot less risky than being there.

Thanks guys, they did provide some interesting shots, but this by far gave a nice insight into the world of a hippos mouth.

David T - would be interested to see a 3D version posted from this.

Here's one using a different orientation of the image.

Not as satisfying as using a 3D camera or the cha-cha method, but I think it works OK.

Really clear image. Forget the 3d stuff! Do yo have any in portrait format? I feel the subject is well suited to it

Here you go John, an alternative option.
