El Capitan
El Capitan is one of the classic Texas mountains and the signature of Guadalupe Mountains National Park.

This is a shot I did on Velvia 100 last fall on a trip. Finally got around to getting the film processed last week. Mail order processing means I save up sizable amounts of film.

I cover more about the peak on my Large Format Blog

Great time of day that has put the spotlight or focus of your comp on the peak, nice work Darren :toast:

Nice one Darren. Interesting peak ... I'm sure there have been more than a couple of people summit that thing (of course I'll never be one of them!).

There is a trail that summits the peak behind it. There is also a trail that goes round the base of the cliff. Need to overnight up top sometime.

Real nice Darren! I never made it to the Guadalupe mountains when I was in Texas, but I did make it to the Big bend state park area. I must say I agree with you as far as putting it up with the big parks, beatiful areas and no crowds.

Thanks all!

Chris, I feel lucky in that Big Bend and Guadalupe Mountains are the two closest parks, but also because both are way under visited. If you have ever been to Yellowstone, Yosemite, or Great Smokey Mountains in the summer you know how overrun some parks get. The Guads are never crowded and Big Bend is really only busy the two weeks of spring break in mid-March. That means I can be out photographing and not have a hoard around me. And if you ever tried to watch a sunset at Hopi Point in the Grand Canyon you know you will be doing it with 500 strangers who will stand in front of your tripod even though it is only 18" from a 1200' drop........

I can spend a week in the Guads and see all of a dozen people and be the only photographer.
