It's been a few weeks since I've posted anything so here are a few photos I took on a trip to the SW with my wife. We just arrived back and had a great trip. I normally go by myself but she has been wanting to see these places in person so we decided to head down there for our 20th anniversary. Unlike most of my trips I didn't sleep in the truck and photograph from dawn to dusk. It was mostly a trip to be together with a little photography thrown in. My tripod also had a leg break off on the first day so that made it a little challenging as well. :0 One thing I did want to mention is that we tried to go to Lower Antelope. They told us that my wife would have to join a different tour as she didn't have a tripod and so couldn't join me on a photographer pass. They also had what looked to be a new regulation stating that you need to get permission every time you want to try to sell a photo taken there. With those hassles we decided to skip Antelope. Anyway, here are a few photos let me know if you have any comments or suggestions!
Congrats on your two decade anniversary! Looks like a fun trip. My favorite shot of the bunch is actually the portrait, #11! I like the others from Buckskin too.
I have to join the crowd here in saying that the images from Buckskin Gulch really stand out here.
I would be very pleased to have taken any of those. How far in did you go? I hear it's bone dry this year.
Sorry to hear about Lower Antelope, and it's only going to get worse as prices to Upper Antelope doubled on April 1, increasing the pressure greatly on the formerly laid back Lower canyon.
And a very happy anniversary to you both!
Quite a feat in this day and age.
Thanks guys! John, we only went in a little over a mile past Wire Pass. We actually found two small pools we had to get across but compared to most years it really was quite dry. It sure is a wonderful place. One of these years I really need to hike the entire thing. John, I'll probably contact you before I do it to get your advice.
I think #5 is the best of the bunch. For a day shot this one is just stunning. Most of my praise comes from the fantastic composition. Nice shots Eric.
For a trip with "a little photography thrown in" I'd say you did exceptionally well! Heck, for a dawn to dusk photo trip, I'd be happy with half the images you have I can't choose a favorite, they are all wonderful. The portrait is a great one (that's one of the bonuses of carrying the tripod...you get to choose the comp, but you get a workout running back and forth!).
Congratulations to you both on your anniversary!
Congrats on the anniversary! Joanna deserves a Medal of Honor for putting up with you for 20 years. I too like the Buckskin shots.
Too bad about Antelope. I'm fairly certain, though, that if they let you take pictures in the first place, they can't legally make you get permission if you want to sell a shot from there later. The only way they can stop you is to forbid you from taking photos while you are there. The First Amendment strongly protects publication of photos in books, magazines, or as fine art prints, regardless of whether they were taken on private property. Possible exceptions are photos of buildings, pets, or people on private property but even this is a gray area. Other possible exceptions are publication of photos on items that aren't considered media publications or art, like printing on t-shirts or posters.
Hey Eric- some good stuff here. Really like # 7 in the narrows- great perspective! The couple shot at the end is also a real keeper. Can't beat Zion in the Spring!
Man you two have legs that are a mile long!!! Huge congrats on your 20 years of marriage and thanks for treated us to more of your fine work! I LOVE the POV on the Watchman shot!
Thanks for all the kind comments folks. I know these weren't my best by any means. It didn't help that my tripod broke on my way out of Buckskin Gulch.
-Grant, thanks for the education on the legalities of selling images of private property. I think I'll just stay out of that one. As for the medal, I think Joanna has already been given several over the years by local officials.
-Pam, your not the first one to mention how long our legs look in that image. I'm not sure what caused that. I don't typically photograph people. Perhaps we simply do have very long legs.

I like all of the Buckskin shots with their red-orange glow, and the wet foreground rocks of the narrows shot.
