I am having trouble resizing an image. The 720 image won't reduce in size to the acceptable 300kb for posting. The same image at 1200 resized to <500kb at an image quality of 4. I have already checked to make sure I am at 8bit. Does anyone know what I am missing?

Sounds like an image with a lot of detail, as evidenced by '..1200 resized to <500kb at an image quality of 4'.
Have you tried the 'Save for Web..' method?
This can strip the EXIF data from the image (choose 'Metadata: None') and perhaps help reduce the file size.
A compressed JPEG file at 4 is going to look pretty poor.

I do my resizing in PSE 10. I use the drop down menu to resize and then insert either 1200 or 720 pixels. After I get the photo through the processing, I then use a "save image" command. I tell PSE to save as a JPEG, then there are a few more windows until I get to the one where I can define the file size. Usually I'm in the 8-10 range for either copy. 200 kb for the small and 500 kb for the large. Then I close the photo and I'm back in the organizer. Go through the process for the 2nd photo. Both start out as the RAW image from my organizer and get placed there as a set when I'm done. That's my workflow and I've not had any problems with it. Hope there is a tidbit here that will help.

Angela - While it's possible to create an image that can't be compressed easily, it's very rare that you'd have an image like that unless you've got a very noisy file.

As John mentioned, it could be a metadata problem. It's rare, but a couple of times I've seen images with corrupted or extensive EXIF info, where the EXIF was more than 200 KB. Definitely try "Save for Web" if you have Photoshop (or some other method of stripping away all metadata and profiles).

If you'd like me to take a look at it, feel free to shoot me an email through here. Alternatively, you could post the file here in reduced form (less than 720) to get it small enough and maybe we could offer advice based on the image itself.
