Grey Wagtail on a waterfall
Went along to the Peak District with fellow member Colin Pickett to photograph some Dippers friday. Had a great day, especially a I was getting to grips with the 200-400, great lens! Although I got a few Dipper pics none of them were real standout pics unfortunately. Light would go from good to dim all the time and I seemed to be stuck at low shutter speeds a lot of the time. Still, we sat by a waterfall for a while shooting some Grey Wagtails and one of them kindly perched on the waterfall for a minute. I think I could do with brightening this up a tad more in photoshop but other than that I quite liked it for the perfectly still bird against the movement of the water and droplets streaking in the air.

D200 with 200-400 + 1.4tc at 550mm, 1/80 second at f5.6, ISO125 (using a BIG long lens for the first time has made me realise I need to do some serious practicing on my long lens technique!)

I think this is very nice indeed. Not only is it a cracking shot of a beautiful species but I find the image full of other interesting elements (besides the bird,of course) such as the splashing water drops, the flowing water, and that attractive moss covered rock.
I like your chosen composition too.

Hi Richard

It was a great fun productive day and this is a really great shot, I particularly like the movement of the water and the moss on the rocks really adds.

I got some similar except mine were facing directly in the sun.
“Now give me my lens back”.

Nice one

Hi Richard, well you deserved to get a good shot travelling all that way with Colin, last week you borrowed Colins 70mm-200mm and this week his 200mm 400mm lens, does he carry all this for you as well.....
Like this a lot,well done

Thanks for all the kind words everyone. Alas no, Colin wouldn't carry everything for me, but then if he did I wouldn't be able to try and sneak off and run away with it when he isn't looking...(oops I just gave my game plan away)

Nice shot, though i like it, i'm not sure, if i would have a longer or a shorter shutter speed to smooth the water or to freeze it.

An original shot,Looks like it could do with just a tad more USM :toast:

I love the idea, just feel the highlights at the bottom are a little distracting. Great action with the water though and really puts you in the birds environment. :toast:

Enchanting image, love the water flow and especially the splashes.

Hi Richard

An attractive shot. I like the composition and great colours and detail. Water droplets work well. Only minor nit from me is the background is slightly messy behind the bird, although this is probably difficult to prevent. None the less, a great effort.

Neat.... agree with Sean re the bg but not a lot could be done I guess, like the environment here and the perch is great, not sure, it is hard to tell on web sized images but it looks like the focus just slightly missed the bird.
