After finding out that my car had been banged back in drivable shape (it looks like a crushed can!) at noon today i quick packed my bags and headed north--knowing that a classic tornado setup was unfolding. It was tough maneuvering with one hand--and even tougher shooting with one hand (i blew the shot of a lifetime by failing to focus correctly ) but i ended up seeing numerous tornadoes in Kansas--and my first ever tornado at night! Amazing... am exhausted, one of the most intense chases of my career. Will take a while to process all the shots (if any of them are in focus... ) but i wanted to let y'all know that i used all the encouraging comments from my last post to psych myself into a successful trip. Was it worth a destroyed car, staples in my head, and a busted finger? Hell no, gimme my finger back--but at least i salvaged a trip that i was sure was finished after my accident last saturday. Hope to have pics within a week--the dr appointments take priority...
You wouldve been if i had taken the time to focus--but that takes time unfortunately in low light conditions, and time is not available in storm photography. Next time, im getting someone else to drive--driving through large hail and heavy rain after storms moving 40 mph is too much of a headache when you just want to take photos!
Pam beat me to it. Now you can drive through the worst hail storms possible without it mattering to your car's body work. Glad you went for it, Stan, can't wait to see the fruits of your one-handed labor!
