I am heading to Pueblo for a conference and am hoping to get some time to myself for a sunset and maybe a sunrise shoot. Any recommendations for a roadside vista or short hike near Westcliffe maybe. Also considdering a drive down to the dunes, but not sure if I will have time. Any help appreciated.
Westcliffe is good at both sunrise and sunset. You can park almost anywhere along the roads out there.
The Lake Pueblo State Park is nearby and may also be an option for you. http://www.parks.state.co.us/parks/lakepueblo/Pages/LakePuebloStatePark.aspx.
A drive to the dunes will take you a couple of hours, but is always worth it.
I-25 south of Pueblo may be a another option if sunrise looks promising...nothing particularly photogenic for a foreground, but the wide expanse of sky to the east may work out well if there are clouds at sunrise.
Take the Jeep and go up Hermit Pass, actually you should let me know when you're going I may come meet you down there, I've been wanting to get up Hermit Pass for awhile
This is the latest update I found on Hermit: 5/16/12 - You can get almost 7 miles from the turn off up to about 11,300 feet in elevation. There is a lot of deadfall, snow and rocks that make the road pretty narrow in places.
