I wasn't able to figure out these two simple issues in CS5, and CS6 is reminding me I still can't answer them.
1-After I open a raw file into PS, I want the default file type to be tif. Sometimes I get tif, sometimes psd, even though I always save as tif.. Where can I set this?
2-Is there a box to disable the tif options box from showing?
1) When you choose 'Save As..' and the format menu bar contains PSD, left click on the bar, press the 'T' key and it will go right to TIFF without having to scroll through the menu to find it.
2) I couldn't find one. Pressing the 'Enter' key makes it disappear quicker.
Neither are elegant solutions to your queries. Send Adobe a Feature Request form, and you never know what might happen in the future.
In Adobe Camera Raw to process from RAW to open in CS5 you can choose all the formats, size, resolution and bit depth. Click on the line of information in blue below your image in ACR and you can change the preferences for all those details.

John's suggestions work.
David and Eleanor - I can't find a way to implement yours.
This is odd. My CS5 (5.1 v 12.1 x64) and CS6 have no External Editing choice within Preferences. Likewise, when opening a RAW file in both ACR's, there is no File Format choice...just Space, Depth, Size, Resolution, Sharpen, and Open as Smart Object.
In ACR, click 'Save Image...' In the Save Options dialog there is a dropdown near the bottom titled 'Format'. There, you can choose Photo Shop, DNG, JPEG, or TIFF.
Same as Lance and Nick: No External Editing under Edit>Preferences. I am using CS5 64 bit (Not the Extended version)--Maybe that's why we're not seeing this?
You see, these 'Save Image' options outlined by both Eleanor & Preston assume that he wants to save the image right after RAW editing rather than opening the image in PS as a CR2 file (which will still happen after saving it as a TIF file), performing some edits and then saving as a TIF file without having to scroll through the menu to find that format.
Like the others, I cannot find an 'External Editing' option in the Preferences menu either.
In addition to what John said about 'Save Image,' it basically leaves you with an extra file, because you will rename the one you open from RAW when you save it in PS, and that will be you're working file.
Thanks for offering the suggestions, though.
Still looking for a solution to a seemingly easy one.
