There appears to be quite a bit of interest in a get together in July at a HOT wildflower location. Check out the feature message and if you are interested put in your choice of dates and let's see how many we can get. It should produce some epic images and hopefully Kane will give us a little instruction on how he composes his great work!
For the most part I think narrowing the date down to the 22nd-23rd of July, seems logical.
That’s a Sunday, Monday and I realize that it won’t work for everybody but I need to make a call now. Sunday will be the day we all meet and hike to the Ice Lakes. Monday will be for those interested in an overnight camp. That way for those interested, it gives us plenty of time to negotiate a Monday vacation day. Many have already spoken to being in the area during the third week of July and for those… I hope the submitted dates work. If not speak up.
Here’s my logic.
First, if you're committed to the long drive to the heart of the San Juans; it’s well worth the effort to take a Monday off from work. Personally, I take a full week off every year to soak in the full experience. I've always looked at the San Juan experience as “effort,” meaning you have to work for the ultimate mountain landscape experience. “Effort” encompasses everything down there. It’s a long costly drive. It will torrential downpour rain during your visit (Silverton is the “Storm Factory”). Also, the mentioned days eliminates a ridiculous Friday night drive after work, and eliminates packing on a Thursday.
Second, there will be less people hiking and camping on Sunday into Monday. Less is always more at Ice Lakes....more parking at the upper TH on Sunday, more excellent camp spots for those willing to stay a night for the fantastic sunrise at Ice Lake, and more composition opportunities for us with less people.
I'll have to inquire about (another) day with no pay or use one of my days planned out for between Christmas and New Years and hope they give me one of those with no pay. If I ask nice, they'll probably let me.
A third day (I'd still head out Friday after work) would be good, gives more shooting time in relation to the drive time. I'll likely be half broke after a week in Glacier/Banff the week of the 4th, but this has also been high on the list. I guess what I'm trying to say is, I'm in.
