Barn Owl(Tyto alba)- Essex, UK
Canon 7D, 600/f4, + EF1.4x III, Gitzo 3530LSV, Wimberley WH2.
Manual exposure mode f8; 1/1600, iso 800.
RAW image processed in Adobe Camera Raw; sharpened in Photoshop CS6; noise reduction using Noiseware Professional Imagenomic; full frame.
Out looking for the Short-eared Owl last weekend. I found the Barn Owl instead. While there have always been Barn Owls around locally, I have never before had one that hunts during daylight in the 30-odd years I've been photographing wildlife at this site.

Small version is good, large version is a stunner.
The wet weather will have forced the Barn owls into daylight hunting especially if they have young, Barnies have little or no oil on their feathers to retain the "fluffiness" for silent flight, hence they are easily waterlogged and cannot fly in the wet conditions.
Its going to be a dire breeding year for them in the South, a couple of years ago my local Barnies could be seen hunting at mid day when feeding young.
That's a cracking image my friend !! Detail is stunning. As it's a male bird, I should think as mike says it's making the most of hunting. I have regulary watched Barn Owl's hunting until about 10am and out again by 4pm when they have young to feed. If you would like plans for an "A" frame nest box, let me know.

An absolute cracker. One of the best barn owl images I've had the pleasure to view.
Can't fault it, it's a cracker of a Barnie shot.
