OWL NEST BOXES - correct construction

Our willife rescue and rehab is coming across many Barn Owl babies who have fallen out of their nest boxes, because the entry holes have been placed too low. The holes should be at least 10" from the floor. That way, the owlets are more developed by the time they can reach the hole.

For those who want to order the plans for nest boxes and put them up (highly encouraged!) here are construction plans that meet the owl's needs re safety and security:

You can also, I'm sure, find free plans online (for many types of birds) or at the library.

Good info, Sandy! I love my owl boxes. Someone in them every year! They are up too high for me to get a good look at what goes on inside there -- I usually just here the shuffling around -- but they are certainly being used. Owls really appreciate them.
