Zack's rainbow image made me remember this image that I'd taken last month. This is one of those pictures from the "out behind my house" series that I've been amassing over the years.
Hey, Erik - thanks! Yeah, this was a pretty amazing rainbow. I see them pretty often over the field behind my house and I've seen double rainbows before over that field too. Usually I notice that it is clear to the west but drizzling to the east (this is in the afternoons) and I know that there is probably a rainbow and I'll have 5-10 minutes to hurry up and setup and get the shots. When I saw this one I really rushed...
It really is quite interesting how there is that darker area between the primary and secondary. I've asked on other sites but never gotten a satisfactory explanation of why that is the way it is. OTOH, you can see here how the colors in the secondary rainbow are in the reverse order of the colors in the primary. That's expected behavior and I can give you a ref if you want to read up on the phenomenon some more.
Thanks, Mark! I'm glad you liked it. I am really lucky to have this view for my backyard and I'll be really sad when the future inevitably brings development to this area. Maybe I'll have enough "out behind my house" images by then to make a book at SharedInk and sell them for "memories" to locals.
Rick - I am lucky, to be living in the spot I am! I do see double rainbows several times a year from my backyard and over this field. Being there at the right time with all my camera equipment set up doesn't always happen however...

I think this is great catch. I don't think I have ever seen a double rainbow like this before.
