I am (tentatively) planning to head out to Telluride for some photography and R&R at the end of this month. Does anyone have recommendations for photo locations to visit out there? In particular I’d like to get some decent shots of Mt. Wilson, Sneffels, and general San Juan images.

Anyone else planning to be in the area around the Memorial Day holiday?

Thanks, Rene

I really like Stony Pass and the area around Silverton; the Molas Lakes area and the Million Dollar Highway.

Wish I could join you, have a great time!

If you are interested in hiking to the top of Sneffels (or even part of the way), you can get some incredible shots. I'm gearing up (physically) to climb a few 14ers and Sneffels may be on my list sometime this spring/summer. My brother ran/hiked to the top of Sneffels a few years ago with some of his cross country teammates and has a great shot of a turquoise blue glacial lake somewhere on the way up to Sneffels. I also stayed in Ridgeway for Christmas a few years ago on a camel ranch. There are a ton of great places to shoot around there!

That Glacial Blue Lake would be Wright (assuming he took the Yankee Boy Route, otherwise one of the Blue Lakes).

The photo above (in Scott B's post) is one of the Blue Lakes, I think the highest one. Here's a shot of the middle one.

Dang Todd, that shot is sweeeet. Are you trying to make me look bad? The shot I posted was taken by my brother (convenient excuse, but true) a couple of years ago with his 2 MP credit card sized casio camera. As you can see, It didn't handle the highlights too well.

Sweet shot, Todd. Scott - your brother's image ain't too shabby either. I'll have to pull up TOPO and see what the hike looks like.

Rene,
Last year, at the end of May, everything was snow packed and you needed snowshoes from the start of the Blue Lakes trail head. This year it should be quite different!

You'll have all kinds of opportunities to shoot Sneffels from the main highways and country roads in the Ridgeway area. I'd recommend a trip up Log Hill Road for a great panorama of the Sneffels Range - morning or evening.

Definitely take Hwy 550 as far south as Molas Pass - classic location.

Great shot, Todd. I love that light on the far end of the lake!

The pictures are awesome! I’ll definitely have to make a trip up to the Blue Lakes.

Bill – are you saying it is worth going up to Blue Lakes this time of year? Or is it still too early?

Thank you everyone for the suggestions.

Rene, most likely it is still too early and your time would be better spent elsewhere. I won't be back in Durango until the end of the month, so I don't have a first hand feel of how low the San Juan snow pack is. The trail head has a great free car campsites. It's definitely worth a drive up and you'll have good views of Sneffels along the way.
