After leaving my batteries to my camera at home on my previous trip out I was really looking forward to breaking in my new D800. I left the house at 2am so I could make it up to the Snowy Mountains in Wyoming for sunrise. Managed to make it up there just in time sunrise, except there wasn't one and the wind was blowing a steady 15 MPH. Finally about 45 minutes after sunrise the sun decided to pop out and the wind decided to stop blowing.

I ended up getting a couple keepers, This first image is a 4 image stitch. It ended up being 60MP. The detail is amazing.

C&C is welcome.

Here is a single shot I took as well.

Both of these are great comps Jim. The B/W on the first one is fantastic. I do have a question though. I've seen several images posted now from the D800 and I'm wondering if compression takes away from some of the detail. In both of these images, it looks like something isn't quite right...over sharpened or something and maybe it's just the way these large files are compressed for the forum...any thoughts on this?

The 2nd shot is great, but the BW pano is awesome! Great job, Jim!

Jack, I think it may be image compression, or just the pure amount of detail crammed into a 1200px image. Here is a 100% crop from the mountain on the B&W Image. It doesn't look overly sharpened to me but I am not always the best judge of my own images.

Fine images and I love the grassy FG on the vertical. Just curious, what wide angle lens are you pairing with the D800?

The WA I am currently using is the 17-35mm 2.8 Nikon. I also have the new 28mm 1.8 which is really nice. Both are fairly small and takes filters. Surprisingly according to lensrentals.com it is rather sharp on the D800.

The b&w image is superb! And the color image ain't far away either.
Excellent light and composition on both. The b&w image does look a bit crunchy, but I'll assume that it's present only in the web version.
I'd love to see a big print of that scene. Excellent work, Jim! :toast:

I usually prefer color images (and the color vertical is very nice), but holy moly the B&W pano is damn nice!!! Well done!

Killer shots! I'd love to see the first in color... that one is pretty epic with those clouds!
