I'm not sure I've handled this image in the correct fashion what I was trying to achieve was a full frontal close up with all the detail sharp with the proboscis extended.
The profile shots I have often include too much detailed environment which tends to be a negative factor on the forum.

Hi Barry this is a butterfly that eluded me for years for a decent image and your choice of viewpoint is excellent however the head and in particular the eyes do not appear to be in focus espcially on the large image. In macro you really need to choose what you want to show in detail whether it is the wing of a butterfly or the detail of a dragonflys head and whilst the idea is very good the results have suffered from the focusing . The front of the probiscis looks sharp and I suspect this is what the camera has focused on leaving the eyes OOF which is very easy to do in macro even with f14+. I hope I am not appearing too negative because I can see you are trying to learn from the forum. From a comp POV I would try and cut out the unwanted space above the butterfly and leave more flower in view to show what it is feeding from. Macro is quite a demanding form of photography especially when the subject moves about!
Just what I was seeking, I do encounter slight difficulties with the 350D but I have no intention of blaming the tools. Wind and movement were added complications but I need to adjust to cope with those.

It's the Dark green I think.

Good advice from Nick. I too would opt for more flower and less BG, as the OOF diagonals are slightly distracting IMHO.

.If its on Knapweed, the Dark Green Frit would be twice the size of the flower head- unless its greater Knapweed which it could be, DGFrits are quite large butts
