Top of the Steens
Looking down towards the Alvord desert from the top of the Steen Mountains in SE Oregon. Taken with D700 with 17mm lens, 1/40 sec @ f/20. A very unpopulated place to go over the July 4th weekend.

Kathryn, is this view near the Little Blitzen Gorge? This is a very nice sunset image you made! I am enjoying the lovely detail in the clouds and of course the yellow flowers in the foreground.

Lovely light. Did you camp up there or drive down in the dark?

Thanks all. This was taken at the East Rim Viewpoint. We stayed at Fish Lake Campground which is 18 miles up the mountain and around 10 miles from summit. We did drive down in the dark. It's amazing that we were over 9700'. No wonder it was so cold and windy.

Beautiful image Kathryn. I really like the composition and side lighting here. The Steens/Alvord are one of my favorite parts of Oregon and you have showcased it beautifully here.. My only nits are that there are several dust spots in the sky and Alvord Desert areas of the image. The image also seems a bit soft. What kind of web sharpening did you use?

Scott, by George, I see those darm dust spots now. Fortunately, they are an easy fix. I used the Nik sharpening software. I had the sharpening level down quite a bit. Perhaps, I just need to increase it a bit more.

What a dramatic vista! Very nice Kathryn! Steens/Alvord is on my list to visit and this pushes it higher on the list.
