Ringlet in habitat
D7000 16-85mm @ 30mm ISO 200 1/60s at f11 camera built-in flash, tripod, cable release.

Taken this morning and trying to show the typical Ringlet habitat of tall grassland surrounded by trees. Does this work or does it look lost?

Hi Nick,

I think this works to an extent but it does look a little lost, probably because it's quite small in the frame but also because the subject looks isolated from the background habitat rather than a part of it. The flash also looks a little strong. Maybe if the subject was lower down it would work better? It does show promise IMO so stick at it

Many thanks Matt the grass was very tall and stood above the other grasses but I see what you mean and the butterfly flew away before I got to experiment some more!

Yes, I agree with Matt, the idea has promise but needs a little more work. Obviously a more helpful subject would be a good starting point!

I personally would like to see the BG as sharp as the subject if possible, after all that is how I would see it in real life. There is an interesting discussion here

on what I would like to achieve, the second and third images in particular.

I look forward to seeing more from you, Nick. :wavey:

Nick

This is an interesting presentation which illustrates the difficulty well. Thanks for sharing your efforts.

Hi Nick
These habishots are suddenly all the rage ! I don't know why- theyve been around for years when you think about it.
I like 'em anyway.
This one does seem as though the subject is a little lost and perhaps as some one has said I think- maybe the back with a bit more detail.
Nice work anyway.
Cheers

Agree with Matt - not only is it a little too isolated from its BG but to me it looks odd that just one stem of grass should tower above the rest.

Nick
In relation to Dave s comment above, it does look a bit odd. The grass seems so high in relation to the background grass stems. Maybe thats whats making me find it strange in a way I can't put my finger on.
All good stuff !
Keep the forum live and vibrant!
