I believe this is a baby acorn woodpecker. My wife spotted it while we were hiking in Warner Mountains of Northeastern California. Poor thing was hopping along the side of the trail and I hope I did not frighten it too badly trying to get a picture. It seemed to hop along pretty well, and even climbed up a stump as we tried to get past it to move on down the trail. Does anyone know if this little one has a chance to survive out of the nest, or can it actually make it back up a tree to finish growing before its next flying lessons?

It's a Williamsons's Sapsucker, Ed. Not an easy bird to find or photograph usually. I would guess from the look of it it's pretty close to being able to fly, so it may well survive.
Nice shot! I bet a parent is watching closely - fledglings often fall to the ground when they have their first landing and parents watch them carefully til they are ok.
Manjot - To clarify, this isn't a critique forum. The image was posted just for the discussion of whether or not the woodpecker would survive. That's why there's no shot information.
Thanks for the ID Nate. Manjot, the specs are Canon 60D, f8, 1/100 sec, iso 400, 85 mm on 17-85 IS lens, with flash. Kind of f8 and be there. Those are my wife's feet in the BG. I used flash just to get a decent picture of this little guy because it was pretty dark under the trees and it was moving pretty fast. I know I probably stressed the little guy more than necessary. . .
