I took my 24-105 for repair today and won't have it for 2-3 weeks. I'm leaving Sunday for 4 days to San Juans-Aspen areas. I have a 17-40 and a rented 70-200 so I'm lacking everything between 40-70mm. I can't afford to rent a second lens so I'm wondering if the 2 lenses I have will cover most of my needs..do you think they will be enough? I plan to do close up flowers with distant mountain vistas where possible and I know the 17-40 will work for that..not sure whether the 70-200 will make up the other ranges I will need for grand scenics. Think I will be OK?

I'm using my 5d MkII

Jack, you should be fine. If not, shoot that 40mm and crop if you have to. Lastly, I have some macro extension tubes that work very well for the 70-200 if you want to borrow them.

I can't remember the last time I shot something in the 40-70mm range, Jack. I think it would be an odd circumstance where you would need to.

Hey Jack, I used my 17-40mm while I was down at Paradise Divide last week and it suited me just fine! In fact, the only time I used my 24-105mm was when I was doing panoramas of Mt. Owen and Mt. Ruby. Hope you have a good trip Jack!

Jack,
If you're coming through Rifle, I have a 28-300L that I'll borrow you for the trip...

My trip plans are changing hour by hour. I was gonna try to hook with Kane at Bisti but that may change and may head to Silverton.

What I think I'd really like to do is catch a night shot at paradise, some wildflowers near the stream at maroon Bells and then whatever else pops into my head. I'm heading out Sat night or early Sunday and will be back Weds or Thurs.

I'll keep that in mind Richard and let you know when I finalize everything. Thanks!

Jack, I have a 28-135 lens you can borrow if you want. It's not an expensive L lens but it's adequate and in manual focus mode it's quite sharp. Let me know if you want to haul it along and we'll hook up sometime Saturday.

Thanks Bill, I'll let you know.

I've found I don't really need to cover the whole range, so I wouldn't worry about the 40-70 gap at all, but... How about trying a 50mm prime lens? This is your chance to rent a Zeiss 50mm to see what a lens with high micro-contrast can do. It's a minimal burden as it fits right in your pocket!

Sounds great Tom but I couldn't get a lens to me in time...I'm leaving Sat night. I did think about going to Englewood camera and get the 50mm 1.8 prime though.

"I did think about going to Englewood camera and get the 50mm 1.8 prime though."
This is one of the best deals on the planet for a fast lens, Jack. And if you can find a subject that will work for a 'starscape' using this lens, it just can't be beat.

John, if you see this, look at Ryan Wrights post of Paradise and tell me if you think the 50mm would work in this area...thanks.

You won't capture that range of landscape (17mm vs. 50mm), but your stars will be much, much brighter (f1.8 or 2 vs. f5.6).
Note that with a 50mm lens, you can only leave the shutter open 10 seconds before you start recording star movement (500 divided by lens focal length = time limit for static stars).
Your 17-40 lens at f4 and ISO 3200 (+/-) will be just fine.
