How can I know which "call for artists" are legitimate and which are maybe "not so much"? I am thinking of trying to find juried art shows to participate in but am a little (no, make that a lot) unsure of how to go about it. Any suggestions?

Nancy, this won't help a lot. That call for artists, I'm fairly certain is little more than a scam. I mark those as pure-D junk and 9 times out of 10 I don't even see them.

Best,

Carol

Nancy,
There is a magazine called "Professional Artist" (formerly Art Calendar) that I subscribe to and they list "Call for Artists" with information and links back to museums, galleries, etc. This magazine can be trusted as I have entered a number of exhibitions that I found on their list.

Web: http://www.artcalendar.com/

Another source is "CAFE - Call For Entry" - I have found a number of listings on CAFE, even one for the Nashville Airport that I entered last year. This is also a reliable source.

Nancy, I also subscribe to the mailing lists for local galleries and have memberships in various art councils where I learn of opportunities. Please check out the two websites above as they certainly can be trusted, and then check further with the individual gallery, museum, art fair. Both of these list all types of calls, so you just have to read through and see what's offered. Hope this helps.

Most are scamming money grabs masquerading as photo contests. You PAY to enter and usually don't win. Most are an insult to artists.
