Cheer up pal!
I've not been very active with the photography lately, lots of processing to do, work commitments and the usual weather seemed to get in the way. I've just bought a Canon 300mm f/2.8 L mk II, so I took a trip to my local deer park to give it a thorough test. Here is a very forlorn looking male Pere David's deer (Elaphurus davidianus). Its the rut at the moment and this chap looked depressed due to not having a set of huge antlers to cover in grass and mud. I'm not sure if its a youngster, or a poorly animal though.

Techs: Canon 7D, Canon EF300mm f/2.8L II IS USM lens, Canon 1.4x extender III, tripod and gimbal head. ISO 200, f/4, 1/1250 sec, aperture priority mode, -1/3 EV. Slight crop from the LHS and top.

Thanks for the comments on my previous photo :wavey:. C's and c's welcome as always.

My initial thoughts are that the new Canon 300mm f/2.8 is a superb lens. Its so much lighter than the mk1 and with the new mk3 extenders, I couldn't detect any AF slowdown at all.

Thanks for looking. :wavey:

Thanks for the comments everyone. :wavey:

It was a very hot day, luckily there was lots of running water in the park for the Pere David's, so they were all wallowing in the mud. This one looked as rough as me, as I had over imbibed on real ales the night before! Not a very good day for photographing them, but I thought the tough conditions would test the lens. It performed brilliantly, but it should considering how much it cost!

Thanks for looking again! :wavey:

He does look a tad warm, the shot looks good considering the conditions. Looking forward to seeing more shots from your new toy
