I have been experementing with my D70 and Questar Telescope. This photo was taken from around 14 Ft. My problem is that I have very little experiance with macro, and I do not know what to expect in terms of resolution. How would this shot hold up to one taken with a good quality macro lens at a close distance? Maybe someone could take the time to post a similar image for comparison. If so, thanks!
I don't have a good quality macro lens and I didn't fuss too much about the subject - opened my wallet and threw down on the window sill - the bill isn't crisp and wasn't completely flat.
Canon 30D, Canon EF-S 17-85 IS f/4-5.6
Shot @ 85mm, 1/500th, f/5.6, ISO 320, lens to subject distance about 10"
Obviously, an apples to oranges comparison. Hopefully, someone with more macro shooting experience will take up the challenge.
Oh, and I upped the ante. Nothing less than a $20 from here on out.
I really don't think you can properly make image quality comparisons from these web sized files. Here is a full resolution (level 1 high compression jpg) file covering just your image area Don't open this without a broadband connection - 883kb file. http://pelzmann.smugmug.com/photos/68693703-O.jpg
I think you will find that macros shot at close distances will far outperform long telephotos. But I'd much rather shoot a rattlesnake at 14 ft than 14 inches.

This looks rather good for 14ft. !
With that long focal length, at 14ft you probably have razor thin DOF!
I shot this with the Camon 100mm macro at about 16 inches.
