I've got the latest version of Canons DPP, which has an HDR merge function. I've tried to use it several times, but it just locks up and I have to stop DPP to be able to do anything else. HAS anyone used that feature in DPP and had it work?

I know there are other HDR merge options out there, but wanted to see how well this worked...

Holy cow, I had no idea that was part of the new DPP! Thanks for the tip, Bob. Here's a screen cap of three images I chose to try. (I tried several sets of three and all came out looking pretty darned great right out of the box.)

And here's the result. I did add a duplicate layer and did a shadow-highlight adjustment only to bring out a little shadow detail, then boosted the somewhat flat contrast with a slight curves adjustment, and added a very minimal boost of yellow saturation to the grasses in the foreground, but those were things I'd have done to a non-hdr image. I'm pretty pleased with what it can do!

I can say without a doubt that the DPP version of hdr merge is doing a better job with these images than Photomatix did with them. I didn't even keep the latter's results. Here's another, with some extra work in CS5, but less than I would've done in any other circumstance. Bob, if you were here, I'd plant a big, wet, sloppy kiss on you. Okay, no I definitely wouldn't (not that there's anything wrong with that), but you get the idea. I'm stoked!

Very impressive!

Try converting your 16 Bit RAW images down to 8 bit before proceeding, Bob.

Glad you got it to work, Todd (and uh, yeah, no big sloppy one needed!) For whatever reason, it just crashes on my computer when I try it. John, I will try your suggestion and see how that works.

How'd you get the update Bob/Todd and what version is it? I have 3 .8 .1.0 Is this update just for the 5D Mk3?

Pam, my version is 3.11.31.0, and you don't need to own the 5D3 to get it. Just go to the Canon USA site and browse to the 5D3 product page and you'll find it under drivers/downloads. It'll update whatever version of the DPP software you have installed.
