I'm becoming addicted to Dippers . I've spent hours just observing and enjoying seeing a pair of them finalising their nest by lining it with leaves before the female takes up residence.
This is a full frame image of the male dipper

Nice image - I'm surprised in your techs that you were shooting at 1/30 @ f16, I know Dippers are round but focusing on the eye 1/125 @ f8 would have been IMO a safer way to go!
Hi Dave, with the 600mm the dof is soooo small even f16 doesn't really give real sharpness front to back of the bird. With these birds, once relaxed, they can be pretty static so longer speeds can give reasonable results with the increased dof.
I did have a link to an on-line dof calculator but can't find it at the moment, but it is well worth plugging a few numbers into one of the programs as the dof results are scary If you want to try it this image distance is around 4 metres.
Phil: working on it lol. The current work area on my website is looking very brown at the moment
edit found an online calculator at http://www.dofmaster.com/dofjs.html This gives a dof of 30mm at 4m
