Smoky Sawtooths
We have been having terrible fires in Southern Idaho. The evening I took this pic, it was clearer and a ways from the Halstad fire north of Stanley. This pic is of the Sawtooths. The sun is between two different layers of smoke.

This looks like an all too familiar site this year in the Rockies.

Despite the tragedy of the conditions, this shot is stunning, Kathryn. Just the perfect amount of detail in the shadows, and extraordinary mood all 'round.

I'm sure you know about our devastating fires we had earlier here in Colorado. Hope yours are more isolated and smaller.

Excellent image.

I like the effect of the smoke in this image and how it also produces a pale sunstar.

yep, 13 major fires in Idaho alone--you can see three of the plumes on a visible sat image of the whole US theyre so huge. Just another consequence of the same forces at work with the beetle kill. Pray for a cold snowy winter...
cool shot though!

Looks like Idaho in August, Kathryn, it's making me nostalgic! Seriously, I think it's a very strong image, well composed and the mountains in the layers of haze are gorgeous. I guess the Middle Salmon takeout road is closed right now, so there's a refugee camp down there of people taking off the river who can't get out. Almost makes me glad I'm not rafting this year.

Moody and effective display of the conditions of Idaho and the West this year. I wouldn't change a thing in your photo. Well captured Kathryn.
