Day hikes out from the Lake Louise Lodge are great. Lots of beautiful angles on the mountains and water. I'm sure the Lodge people can suggest other day trips. Driving up to Jasper would be a day up and a day back, including stops for photos, but also WELL worth it -
Castle Mountain at Castle Junction is beautiful. The tram up to the top of the mountain from the town of Lake Louise, looking out over the mountaisn and valley is gorgeous.
Johnston Canyon is a nice easy hike; many photo opps along the way as well as of the lower and upper falls. If you don't have much time, the shorter walk just to the lower falls is very nice. Bring a tripod (and ND filters if you have them) because there will be an opportunity to get some nice slow shutterspeed silky water at several spots along the way in the water crashing over the rocks in the stream and of the waterfall.
I'm sure others here will add more.
Have a great trip! !

I just got back, are you flying into Calgery than renting a car? Are you going to day hike or just sight see for car?

Rick: You might look at Eva McDermott's gallery. She made a trip there in 2009 and posted some really fine shots from Bow Lake. I would also take in Morraine Lake; a classic for a reason. >=))>

Bow lake for sure (Thanks Bill!). The Ice Walk guided tour on Columbia Glacier was also fantastic. Sandy and Bill mentioned some great spots too. You might want to pick up Dawin Wiggett's e-book photo guide of the area as well.
Go to Yoho NP take the early bus to Lake O'Hara. Take day pack with lunch , camera, with wide angle lens and hike the Alpine circuit for one of the most beautiful hikes in the world. Stunning alpine scenery, Marmots, Pikas, Mountain Goats, and maybe even a Grizzly enjoy.
Was traveling through that area last week. The Canadian Rockies are amazing! Beware of massive construction on RT 93 just above Lake Louise. Were stuck there for hours which forced us to miss Glacier NP the following day. This time we didn't do any side trips, but even from the main road from Banff to Jasper I was able to get some great shots. The boat trip out on Lake Maligne to Spirit Island was one of my favorites.

Lke Edith Cavelle at sunrise is one of my favorite spots, great reflections of surrounding mountains with rocks showing through from the bottom of a crystal clear lake. There are several really impressive falls on the Icefields Parkway up toward Jasper (really long day trip to Jasper though). Tangle Falls, Athabasca Falls, Sunwapta Falls all really nice and easy to reach (can be very busy). Right around Lake Louise, Moraine Lake, Tram, Johnson Canyon, Bow River, Paradise Valley if you want to hike (watch out for grizzlies and go in a group). If you are a mountain goat, you can do some hiking up to some of the tea houses out of Lake Louise too. Bighorn Sheep tend to hang out on the hills above Golden, BC, sometimes along the higher parts of the Icefields Parkway, or down toward the Hot Springs at the South entrance to Kootenay NP (all a ways out from Lake Louise).
You will love it and never want to leave. . . .no matter where you decide to go.

There are two awesome hikes from Lake Louise. One goes to the Plain of Six Glaciers and the other to the Little Beehive. The Little Beehive trail is especially great as you get great views of Lake Louise from above. Oh and as Eva mentioned, get a copy of Darwin Wiggett's ebook(s). They're definitely worth it! ~ www.oopoomoo.com
Another vote for Plain of six Glaciers. Start your hike early tho alot of hikers, carry snacks and water. There were alot of avalanches when I was there one about every half hour a neat thing to see and hear.
