I'm looking to buy a backpack to carry my Nikon 400mm lens. Ideally it would be suitable for carrying the lens a few miles over rough terrain and also suitable to take on planes as hand luggage. Searching the web I find conflicting information about whether certain bags are suitable for such a lens. For example, a search on Lowepro's bag finder comes up with no results for this lens. Separately, one of their backpacks is quoted as taking a DSLR camera fitted to a 400mm f2.8 lens but the internal dimensions quoted are smaller than my camera and lens. Has anyone got this lens and experience of which pack(s) are good to carry it?
Many thanks

David - I regularly carry my Canon 500mm + 5DMk3 and my 300mm +7D in a Thinktank Airport accelerator V2.0 - it goes under an airplane seat and in overhead and its fine to carry for a reasonable distance ....its the best Ive ever found
Good luck - I'm sure others here will have some great ideas, too -

Not sure if the dimensions of the 400mm have you looked at the fstop gear? These people are amazing and the bags are built for hikers and adventure photographers. Don't be scared off by the back order situation - just go for the satori which can compress down to nothing for flights. An interesting thing is that all their backpack frames are 18 1/2 inches long. The room is expanded via depth of pack and compressable. May be worh a phone call to talk to them

David, I use a Kinesis Bag for my Canon 500 with 1.4 converter and camera attached. It also has a net holder attached to each side, and a roomy case attached to the back that is big enough for a flash or some other gear. It has a shoulder strap and you can buy it with a backstrap to carry it like a backpack. It makes it as a carry-on for flights. Hope this helps.

+1 for the Kinesis bag--I use one for the same setup as Colin, and they have a variety of sizes for different rigs. It carries very well on your back, and can be used as a carryon that fits in the overhead bin. Even on fairly small planes I've been able to jam it into the overhead compartment.

My friend just got this and loves it:
(do consider one with wheels, also - the walks thru airports seem to be getting longer and longer)
