Anyone interested in hitting up the Trout Lake/Glenwood/Klickitat area for fall color? Nuts if I don't have a too full schedule for the fall, but I do have Oct. 20-21 open.
We could shoot the Trout Lake area on Saturday, spend Saturday night at Guler-Trout Lake Park, and then loop through Conboy NWR and the Klickitat River Gorge on Sunday.
There's a ton of good stuff in this area if the color is on, and mid to late October is typically the best time. If there is interest, I'll check and see of the group site is available and post example photos from when I've been in the area in prior years.

I'm available that weekend - it is the start of my October vacation, and I am interested.

Sounds good to me. I should be available and will plan to go.

I'm in at least for one of the days...checking into lodging options up there...

My friend Ron and I will be able to make this event. Waiting anxiously to see your images John.

Here's a link to some example images place on a Google Map that notes where I took them. Click in the list on the left or on the placemarks directly to open them and see the photo. You can then click on the image to open it at my website if you want to see it larger.
There's some good stuff in the Conboy NWR area too, I just don't have any from there. There's also huge potential along River Route Rd. (click on the "Maple's Mood" placemark).
In addition, the understory Vine Maple along Highway 141 south of Trout Lake can be great. I have some shots from there, but don't have them on my website. I'll post an example below.

I just found out my son is coming home from Alaska for that weekend. I only get to see him a couple times a year so I'll have to miss this trip.
Bummer!

Bummer Steve; I was looking forward to seeing you again. I'm glad you'll be able to see your son thought, good times. Hopefully next photo shoot!

Hi John...
Count me in. It would be nice to meet some more PNWNP.

I'd like to try and make it at least one of those days John. Really looking forward to shooting some fall color!

The Cascade Creek fire on the south slope of Mt. Adams is still only 65% contained, and no date has been set for containment. Do we want to re-think our destination?
... my guess is that rains will come by oct 21 and the skys will be clear....
Posted by Phil Knouf on October 9, 2012 at 12:32 AM
John, have you checked on available group spots for the Trout Lake site? Should we be placing our reservations ourselves? Also, for your image Fall Flowing there is a gravel road along the south side of the river. I have driven this road before and the road looks interesting. Is this just a company road or open to the public? Have you ever researched it?
Thanks,
Phil

Hi gang,
I've been out of state and inconsistently connected to the Internet, but am flying back to the PNW tonight and am back in the saddle. How's the weather been there? Any rain yet? Has anyone been able to get out and see how the color is developing? What's the status on the fire?
Phil, I have not explored that road, and don't know its status. Individual sights at the campground I linked to are first come first served. When I originally posted about the group camp site, there weren't many who indicated they would be camping. If there are enough of us, I'd be happy to explore it.
With that in mind, how many are planning on camping at the campground in Trout Lake on Saturday night?
Thanks all; I'm looking forward to it!!
Posted by Gary Brockway on October 11, 2012 at 12:25 PM
The latest I have seen on the fire is that it is still only 75% contained. Several inches of rain is predicted Friday - Sunday, at least in Portland. If that happens and reaches up to Mt Adams it should help.
The Mt. Adams Wilderness remains closed along with the adjacent national forest areas north of the forest border, west of the Yakima Reservation, east of FR 23/2329 and south of FR 5603. A complete closure description is (supposedly) found in the closure order on the forest Website here: www.fs.usda.gov/Internet/FSE DOCUMENTS/stelprdb5391943.pdf
I plan to camp at the campground, weather and wife permitting. If so, I will probably go up Fri eve and get an individual site.
What are the logistics? Do we want to meet somewhere before we shoot on Sat, or all shoot on our own Sat and meet Sat eve? If we are to meet, where and when?
Posted by Phil Knouf on October 15, 2012 at 11:19 PM
John, there will be two of us coming in on Friday and staying until Sunday. Do you know of others coming in then other than Gary? How about yourself? Any schedule for getting together on Saturday morning?

I had hoped to be able to head up during daylight on Friday, but it looks like I'll either arrive after dark or early on Saturday.
Since my arrival is uncertain, I recommend that others post a note on the board at the entrance to the campground where you pay for the campsite. You can note what campsite you are in, so that as others arrive they can find you and meet to plan shooting.
If you are interested, send me your e-mail address (use the e-mail icon below) with your cell phone number. I can put them all together, and then send a list back out to all who write me. (Hopefully there is cell coverage there.)
This is a loosely organized shooting trip, with no set agenda. If I can make it Friday night, I plan to head over to Elk Meadows at the west end of Trout Lake before dawn (about a 10-minute drive). The weather report is questionable, but if Adams shows it can be a treat. If not, there is usually still good color to work. Good sunrise color is happening roughly around 7:30 a.m., so if anyone is interested in joining let's plan on meeting at the registration area at the campground at 6:15 a.m.; that should give us plenty of time to drive to Elk Meadows and set up.
After that, we could head back to the campground, eat brunch/lunch, and plan what we want to do in the afternoon. For those who make the drive Friday in daylight, note how well the Vine Maple is doing along Highway 141 on the way in. If it is overcast and rainy, working this area might be good for Saturday afternoon.
On Sunday, I think doing the loop to Conboy/Glenwood/Klickitat/Lyle would be a good idea as we head home. However, everyone is welcome to do their own thing.
We are on our own for food, but for those camping it can be fun to join up and talk shop during meals. If anyone is staying elsewhere, you would be more than welcome to join.

Does anyone have directions and know which camp grounds we'll be at?
I'll be arriving early on Saturday morning (not too sure how early yet).
And does anyone have a camp site I could share with?
Posted by Phil Knouf on October 18, 2012 at 12:51 AM
John, I have never been to Elk Meadows. It apparently is more than just an RV Park? Do you take the turn to the RV Park or another turn?
Looking forward to a great fall color weekend. I have been up there twice in the last week. The colors are about the best I have ever seen.
Posted by John Williams on October 18, 2012 at 9:56 AM
Don, the link to the campground website is in the first post in the thread; click on "Guler-Trout Lake Park." You'd be welcome to share with me.
Phil, I've got your phone number and will add it to the list that I will e-mail to participants tonight. (I deleted it above, so that it won't be permanently posted here.) Elk Meadows is probably the wrong name to call it; I'm not sure of the proper name. The turn out is just past the Elk Meadows RV Park entrance. I added a marker to the Google Map linked to in my post above that shows where the pull-out is (just below, south, of Morning Glory and Hidden Beauty).

Thanks, John, for the offer. I will accept it and stay with you. I saw the first post thread about the camp site. But I asked yesterday in case it had changed and I missed it somewhere. See you Saturday.
Posted by Ned Fenimore on October 18, 2012 at 12:00 PM
I plan to be at the registration area at 6:15 AM. I'm only able to stay for Saturday, and will need to head back in the afternoon/evening. Looking forward to it..

I'm debating whether to come up on Saturday or Sunday, I can only do the day trip. The forecast shows 13+ MPH wind on Saturday, 2 MPH on Sunday, so I'm leaning to Sunday. Any thoughts?
I'm looking forward to the trip and to see everyone. I'll be staying at the Trout Lake Valley Inn on Hwy 141, a short distance south of the campground. Their continental breakfast is open to the public; $5, sweet potato waffles on request. A place to dry off, warm up and/or visit/plan/show photos if you're interested.

I sent an e-mail to those who sent me phone numbers; if you sent me your number but don't get a reply, let me know.
For those joining for Saturday morning, you might want shoes +/- pants that do well with wet. We may want to walk out in the tall grass, and it will be wet with dew +/or rain.
Don, sounds good. Unless work is catastrophic, I'm heading up tomorrow night and will see you there.
Ned, glad you are coming even if you can only join for the day.
David, those lower winds are tempting. The rain doesn't discourage me much; the fall color can even look better wet. But the wind might be tougher. I'm hoping to see how the oak are doing on Sunday; they are much more colorful when it is raining.
Catherine, did they say what hours the breakfast is open?

John, I think you have my cell phone number from our Seal Rock trip. If not, I'll e/mail it to you.
Where can I find you Saturday AM? I'm going to try and be up there between 6 and 7.
Posted by John Williams on October 19, 2012 at 1:02 AM
I'm going to meet those who can make it at registration at the entrance to the campground at 6:15, and then head to near Elk Meadows. I put an icon for where we are headed on the Google Map here. (Zoom in on the "Pull out for parking.")
Breakfast hours at Trout Lake Valley Inn: 6:30 to 9:30. Sweet potato waffles on request, and a dry, warm place in which to eat them! Other continental breakfast items, no eggs or meat though. $5.
2300 Highway 141, about 1.5 miles south of the campground.

I won't be able to make it after all. I ruptured a disc in my back so I will be laid up for a while. I just hope I can avoid surgery.
Have fun and I'll catch you on the next one.
