Along with hiking up to Verde Lake back at the end of July, a couple days later I made the trip up to the Uncompahgre Plateau and around Matterhorn Peak to the north-ish face of Wetterhorn. Its not a new shot (full props to Jack for his inspiration) but it represents the completion of of a goal that I've a had for the last 3 years. The weather almost kept me from it again, we smartly delayed going up because of a big storm. We spoke to some peak baggers at the trailhead that told us the horrors of the massive hailstorm they endured up on Uncompahgre Peak. That left us with an over-nighter as our only option and really just one afternoon and one morning to shoot. I think we got pretty lucky -- would have loved some more clouds, but its better than hail and rain. I'll post a couple from the morning later...

Spectacular, Paul. Although I love the profile of Wetterhorn in red light, the the peaks is stunning!

#1 is simply a grand view with some great light. I like the composition you chose, as well.

Thanks, guys -- I'm not sure why the 2nd and third images look desaturated. The second shot is more along the same red color as in the first shot.

Classic view of Wetterhorn. Someday I would like to get in there. I've climbed Uncompahgre a number of years ago (in the days of film, about 1998 b.d.)and have wanted to get to Wetterhorn every since.

Thanks, Don. It was the first time I had been up there -- tried unsuccessfully last summer trying to come in from the Owl Creek Pass side. It was kinda tough to do as an overnighter at the end of a week of hiking, I would have liked to spend at least another night up there to get more shots of Uncompahgre.

That first one is amazing. Spectacular light.

Paul, the Three Kings is real nice (lacks the oomph that you noted like in nice composed #1). This takes me back to the late 1980s when I would hike in and camp for a week below Uncompaghre in Big Blue.

I bet in the 80's it was really quiet up there, Doug. I could spend a week up there, I was bummed to only have one night.
