Just when I was getting the hang of the macro lens I had to revert to my original Canon 350D when the 1D3 went sick. This I think was one of the best efforts. 180mm f/5.6 1/50sec ISO200 hand held. It's really amazing how much more you discover getting up close the ski-type snow boots were new to me.
Still enjoying the macro challenge and it keeps me of the streets and out of trouble.

bg is what it is, but your technique seems to fine as you've got some good detail in there, the eye is a winner, though creepy!

Hi Barry,
It's a pretty good looking shot, with excellent sharpness on the eyes ( where it matters in macro terms IMO )
I have to agree with Phil re the BG, but your choice of DOF has helped minimize the distracting pale stem of the plant, so certainly not a deal breaker.

A nice photo of a flesh fly Barry. I agree with Andy that you have made the best of the BG with this one. Very nice.
Nice image with good detail. I agree with Andy regarding the background.

Thank you for the comments, not sure how to deal with backgrounds I'm an as is minimum skill. Probably as is rather than what I'd like for backgrounds, the subject being the prime factor.

I actually rather like the background, the way it radiates out from the bottom left pleases my eye, and leads me into the subject. In a minority, as usual, I expect.

Nice one Barry ' To me its just the main diagonal on the background which draws my eye I,m affraid. I would certainy up your ISO and get a smaller aperture as a result. You need that bit extra DOF.
(In my humble opinion )

I don't mind the background Barry but it doesn't look quite sharp enough to me. I don't think you can handhold this lens at this level of magnification at 1/50 second. At the very least I would have used ISO 400 or more, but a tripod would have been even better.
