I'm a Nikon shooter trying to help a Canon shooter convert some CR2 files to jpegs. They accidentally set their camera to shoot RAW and don't have any kind of PP software. I use Nikon software to do all of my NEF conversions so am out of my depth. Is there a free converter out there that I can download do convert the files? I downloaded the Codec from the Canon site but all it appears to do is display the thumbnails. Thanks in advance for any help.

It would help to know what kind of computer your Canon-using compadre has. If he has a Mac, then Preview can export CR2 files as jpegs. Preview is found on all modern Macs. Picasa can convert CR2 files to jpegs as well and it works with both Macs and Windows OSes. These two applications are also very simple to use.

You might try IrfanView, it handles CR2 files and can do batch conversions from RAW to jpg. It is a free program that can be found at http://www.irfanview.com/

All Canon cameras include a cd with digital photo professional on it. That is Canon's raw converter. So they have soctware to read and process th e raw files.

Thanks for the replies. I used Picasa and was done in just a couple of minutes.

I would install the Canon DPP or down load it if the disk is not available. Much better than Picasa and has a lot more features. Personally your friend should learn to process the RAW files to optimise the images. Then convert to jpeg later. Much better IQ in the long run.
