I'm sitting in the laundermat in Jackson waiting for the smoke to clear and the Moose Rut to begin. If you didn't know already a couple of days ago a fire broke out a few miles south of Jackson. Today the whole range is smoked in and has been for over a week due to several fires. Forget scenics if thats what your after.
Hoping for some rain or strong winds to clear out the valley. I have seen several large Moose worth staying for as I imagine the rut will start in the next week.

The Fall color is starting. The willows etc have started along the Gros Ventre and I would imagine the colors will be quite good within a week. Haven't checked the Oxbow lately but will do in the next couple of days. Hopefully some of the smoke will clear out although there is talk that a couple of control burns will be starting shortly.

WIFI is spotty where I am but will try to update if anything special occurs.

Triple thanks. I know the large fire folks have been worried about has been south of town near Snow King. I wonder if it is clearer up toward Oxbow. Most of the webcam shots look pretty smokey.

I was there a month ago when smoke from fires in ID and MT gave some haze. Killed sunsets and sunrises, but made for some nice soft light, especially for Mormon Row. I am sure the Jackson fire is giving much heavier smoke though.

I was in Cody this week and the smoke from the fire outside Casper was quite thick. Cody is still a ways from the Jackson area, but the drift was that direction. I would be definitely be checking with Park officials before going.

Thanks for the update, Don. This definitely helps me plan where to go (or not go) this year for my fall colors trip.
