I will be traveling to Portland for a week and will have 4 open days. Wondering if anyone has a recommendation for a couple of places to visit. I have been reading about the San Juan islands and the bio-luminescent (dinoflagellates). Beaches with birds and sunsets with moving water....... Anyone have ideas for a Utah photographer in the PNW? Thanks for your time. Robbie
Here is the site I have been looking at for the information I mention above....

Well, what is your pleasure? Do you like color high up in the mountains or along the Columbia Gorge amongst the waterfalls? The vineyards will be showing nice color by then along with the hills and valleys in the Willamette Valley. The Coast Range should also be showing some nice color. The coast is always nice and should have some color Who knows we might even have an early dusting of snow on the peaks. Always lots to enjoy!!

Waterfalls and the coast sound nice. Also interested in the San Juan Islands and the bio-luminescence I hear about. Thanks for your time.
Going to the San Juans will mean a day of travel there and a day back, considering driving, ferries, etc. I'll let sometne from WA chime in on the likelihood of finding what you want there. Coast, fall foliage and waterfalls should be relatively easy to nab on four days.
Robbie, I'm thinking you'll have a chance to see more of the local sites around Portland if you're based there for your 4 days. The Gorge and the Coast (suggest to do the Three Capes scenic drive) can be done in that span of time, whereas a trip to WA to the San Juan Islands would take up most of that time with 2 of the days lost to driving. That leaves a nice excuse to come back and see the San Juans another time. Btw, take in the Japanese Gardens among the things you see in Portland. Hope you have lots of fun in the Great PNW! Sure have loved my trips to UT!!

I'm in agreement with the others that you'd spend a lot of your time just getting to and from the San Juans, so best to save them for another trip.
Some suggestions for beaches, sunsets and moving water: Indian Beach at Ecola State Park immediately north of Cannon Beach, plus Oswald West and Hug Point State Parks just south of Cannon Beach. Cape Kiwanda at Pacific City would also be good.
