I am planning a short 2-3 day backpack next weekend into the Dolly Sods Wilderness in W. Va. Does anyone familiar with the DSW have recommendations on particular trails to hike or areas to see? On a very distantly related topic, I was going to post this topic with the regional forum covering W. Va., but I could not find one. Is there one? It seems to have fallen into a gap between the SE, NE, and midwest forums, covered by none, or I am just missing it? Looks the same for Pa. Are there other states that have no forum to call home? :frown:

Dolly Sods is a great place this time of year. You may not be aware but there are unexploded artillery shells in the area from WWII. The Bear Rocks area at Dolly Sods is great for photography especially at sunrise. The blueberry bushes should be red for you. The Nature Conservancy has a brochure on the bear rocks preserve area and a map. The climate at the top is harsh and mimmicks Canada so bring cold weather clothing.Nearby Blackwater Falls State Park is closeby with beautiful waterfalls. Canaan Valley Resort State Park is worth a visit too. Great place to shoot the milky way too as there are lots of open space there.

one more thing- check out the Monongahela National Forest website as they have a Dolly Sods wilderness brcohure that is probably online too with the trail and topo maps together. This should keep you busy for your visit. Andrew
