I've been trying to figure out what to do with all of this smoke since I can't get most of the shots I had planned. I decided that the best thing I could do would be to shoot into the setting sun. The sun alignment was about right for this shot of Mount Meeker and Longs Peak as seen from the east summit of Meeker, so last night I headed up for sunset. I know that this isn't up to the standard of some of the guys who do these types of shots all the time (Jack, Kane, Jody, etc) but I thought you might still enjoy seeing it.

You've made much better lemonade than I have been able to!

Looks like some pretty sweet lemonade, Erik. I'd be happy to call this image my own. I like the soft light and subtle colors. Great composition too, but I've come to expect that from you.

A brilliant plan! The smokey haze really makes this shot.

Yeah, just a little sunset stroll, huh, Erik?
That's just a magnificent capture, from capture to presentation. This ought to sell like the proverbial pancakes!

Except for that little streak of funk to the left side of Meeker this is really sweet.

Thanks folks! I just took a look at the photo posted on this thread and was disappointed to see that it is very blurry. That's a real shame. I guess you can see another version of it here: http://imagesofrmnp.com/photo/sunset-from-the-top
Pam, I'm not sure which funk you are referring to on the left side of Meeker. Do you mean the little spot of lens flare on the far left of the peak?

Very Nice capture and processing Erik: I was out earlier this week and just complained about the lemons and did nt try making lemonade. You did a great job and caused me to rethink my aversion to lemon days

Killer shot!!! The angle of the peaks is awesome, as is the alignment of the sun. Well done!

Yes Erik, it looked more to me like a weird halo rather than a lens flare.

Great shot, Erik. And I agree that the image linked your site is much sharper. I took the liberty of scrolling through some of your other sunset images in that gallery and you have something really nice going!

Holy Smokes! Literally... Erik, I really like this shot, especially if I distance myself from the fact that there’s wildfire smoke in the atmosphere. I do like the nice layering the smoke provides in the distant peaks.
The composition is about perfect. I just love this perspective of Longs, it’s different, and Meeker from your vantage adds the sudden, sheerness the rounded/hump-like Longs needs to appear grand and 14erlike. Boy does that Chasm drop-off to the right add a huge sense of depth too.
I assume you used the Iron Gates Route? Never been up that route before.
Lastly, I’ve been following your recent images and noticed you have been shooting the D800. I’ve also noticed you have been bouncing back and forth between the Nikon and your Canon. Do you own the 5d 3? How do you like that D800?

Thanks guys! Kane, I just borrowed a friends D800 for 24 hours and did as much shooting as I could during that period. That camera is sweet! I think though that I'm going to hold off and see if Canon comes out with a competitor such as is hinted at in this link. http://tinyurl.com/8hyxjow If they don't then I might have to migrate to Nikon.
As for the route, I did take the Iron Gates. I hadn't been up there either despite having been in the area so long. Generally the best shots are from below so I don't usually scale the peaks unless they get in the way.

Nice arrangement of peaks and sun.

That's some tasty lemonade Erik! Great comp and deftly handled exposure.

Holy crap, that's a damn nice shot!

Erik, don't be modest...you killed it! Great photo!
