I've seen this one and it's badass. Definitely not the cheapest headlamp on the market but it's some seriously interesting technology.

A good use for an REI dividend.

It looks like overkill to me. I like to keep things simple.

I'm with Mark on this. If you like wearing a thong on your head, fine, but I prefer a simple ball cap with several LEDs mounted in the bill. I got one as a promotional gift from a contractor, and I have to say it works great and looks good, too.

Howard: Unless those ballcap LED's are of the hyper-bright high output variety they'll be useless for any sort of real night time navigation/hiking. I've done a lot of it and the brighter, the better. I'm sure it's a great option around camp, maybe for a night time stroll to the toilet and for map reading, but I'll stick with the "real" headlamps for proper trail illumination. BTW, thong on your head cracked me up!

I use the RXP http://www.petzl.com/us/outdoor/headlamp/performance/myo-rxp - it's in the same "performance" series but looks a lot more slimmed down and lighter. The thing is so bright I can light up a forest at night, I can spotlight peaks. Great for hiking at night when one of those little headlamps would be useless.

Looks like I might hurt myself with one of those new Petzls.
