It' that time of the year again to start posting some of our favorite photos and locations of the Fall Splendor. So....lets get started with one of my favorite landmarks that announce the coming of FALL. The bloom of the Roan Mountain Goldenrod which is happening right now at Carvers Gap.
This year is not as prolific as years in the past but it is always a joy to witness the ever changing landscapes that arrive with each seasonal change.
Stuck in other commitments this weekend otherwise I would be out there. Any suggestions, other than the Smokies, for the weekend of 10/13? I don't want to join the hoards of leaf peepers in the park.
Spent the day yesterday traipsing around in the rain and fog in Shenandoah. Streams were barely a trickle but colors were good at the highest elevations. Will try to post something tonight.
Ed,
I was thinkingI was having a conversation with myself. Thanks to you and Richard for replying. While you are processing I thought I would share a few more from my adventures over the past couple of days. Lets see if this might get some responses...?
I went up to Grandfather Mountain today (Mon Oct 8th 2012). Heavy overcast morning then rain the moved in. I was not able to get the shots I was looking for on the Linn Cove Viaduct but I did find a few spots on Wilson Creek below the Parkway that turned out decent. Here is one of my favorites.
As far as a leaf color status, I would say Granfather Mountain is peak at Parkway level and below. A suggestion for others who want to get out this way is to explore the gravel roads that cross the parkway around this area and travel down in elevation. You never know what you might find. I found this site by traveling one of these roads I had never traveled before and found some really nice areas for shots through the woods and a few creek shots with color around.

Hi, I will be in Boone NC next week and was wondering if anyone has location suggestions.
I am hoping for fall foliage and am always interested in wildflower opportunities.
Any ideas are appreciated.

Harold I like all of your shots but for me it's a toss up between the last two. I creek shot is the one I picked at first because that is the type shot I like to work on. Then I took a second look at the AT shot and I really love the perspective you captured there.
I haven't made it out for color yet. Just a little change here and I haven't made it into the mountains. It seems like I have had something going on every weekend lately. I really need to give the somewhat new to me 50D a good workout.
Some great shots already! Here are 3 from Sunday hike in Shenandoah fog. Colors on this trail (White Oak) peaked last year Oct. 14, so its definitely a week earlier. And the streambeds were really dry.
#3 The first shot is from Big Meadows with masses of huckleberry and deerberry glowing all shades of red in the fog with fall's grasses providing some nice contrasts.
Even though I've stepped down as a moderator here, I still have the power! This is now the official fall color thread. Where are the moderators anyway???
Ed,
Very nice shots my friend! Love the variance of textures in your first shot. I sincerely appreciate you sharing what you have found out there. I really need to get up your way sometime. Maybe next spring I can round up Richard Siggins and Thomas Biggs and we all visit the Shenandoah area.
Wonder if anyone else has anything to share from their journeys this fall..???
I am headed over to the Smokes this coming weekend (Oct 19-21) to finish off my fall shooting. I will share some shots from that journey when I return.
It was great to here from Richard Bernabe. I hope I did not over step my membership privileges by starting a Fall Thread..???
Maybe Richard can share one of his magical shots from one of his latest exotic trips. Always nice to here from somebody living his dream.
If you guys make it up here let me know and I will join you for some fun! It looks like I may do a quick trip to Knoxville for the weekend and game, but may run up to the Smokies on Sunday morning. You have a sense of how things are looking around Cades Cove or up higher? I went back up to Shenandoah on Tuesday and conditions were spotty. Need to process a couple of images that might work.
Hey guys. I made it up to BRPW for a few hours Sunday. Colors around Blowing Rock - Rough Ridge were pretty close to peak. Further south was still a few days away. I'm going to add a few from that day to this thread to give you some ideas.
Great colors and compositions! If you could capture #3 w a special sky that would be really incredible!

I headed over to the GSMNP this past Friday. Went down to Tremont...the colors were nice, but the water level was too low to get the shot I was after. Got a shot off Little River Rd that I posted in the Landscape CG. Check it out here. One thing I noticed is that there aren't any/many red maple leaves, whereas last year at this time, there were a lot. Anyone know if that is due to my timing or it is due to this season's attributes? I'm hoping there are still some good areas this coming weekend as I'll be in the park for the whole weekend. Happy shooting!

This is a foot bridge on the Rough Ridge Trail.
The day started out clear and sunny but quickly turned overcast.
