At the risk of looking a total muppet ...... I have bought and installed LR4 and downloaded the 4.1 update. I am going to download the 4.2 update but my question is this.
I still have LR3.4 on my computer. Do I need to keep that or can I uninstall it? (I do have LR3 on a disc).

There are some really huge changes between PV2010 (LR3) and PV2012(LR3, CameraRAW 7.2 and CS6).
To take full advantage of them all your system needs the latest version of CameraRAW, well 7.1 at least. The sad thing is that CameraRAW 7 (all versions) does NOT talk to CS5; so sadly, to take advantage of all the benefits of PV2012 you do indeed need Photoshop CS6.
Retro editing of duplicate smart object layers containing RAW files, and tonal mapping of 32 bit float point TIFFS in LR4 are two things that spring to mind as being awkward without the full triumvirate of PV2012 software.

Just remember to upgrade your LR3 catalogues from 2010 to 2012 profiles.
