Old One.
Just my meagre contribution to the Deer Fest ! I was in charge of a Red Deer and Fallow herd in North Lincs many years ago, at a park called Normanby This is one of the few pics of a Red Deer I have where it is actually doing something. He was in fact going for me. And I joke not. It was not just a show off charge but he carried on. People say they never get nasty- don’t believe it. I only just got back in the Austin A55 van in time ( wow- that dates it!!! ).
This was taken on FP4 in 1969 on a Pentax S1A
No idea of exif info, but I managed to rescue this from an old folder of negatives hidden in the bottom of a drawer the other night.. One of my not so good pics compared with today’s digital standards , but hey – it brings back more memories than the many thousands I have taken .since.
I can hear the sound of the van door slamming shut now, and the bloke next to me saying **** me !! To this day I will never know how far he would have taken the charge but believe me, charge he did. He had been away from hinds for most of his life so suddenly been stuck in the middle of a load of them, his inner instincts probably became suddenly apparent.
This deer was affectionately known as “Joey “ and I had collected him from Rhyber castle, a couple of years previously.
When he died he was a 14 pointer and I have his antlers above my fireplace today.
One winter he was ill and my wife Jean brought him back from the brink with hot soup from a thermos flask At one time he couldn’t walk and when he got back on his feet she would walk him up and down with her arm around his neck,
So sad really to see such a noble animal looking so pathetic. The sad thing was, when he died, Scunthorpe Corporation had him stuffed, and it was the worst case of taxidermy I have ever seen.! He was put on display in the local museum and I never did pluck up the courage to go and look at him.I think he fell to bits in the end |!
Cheers

Austin? Place in Texas right?

The story adds to the fire in those eyes, you can see he is not really happy. I wouldn't be either, all those females.

Great story, John. I wonder what made him think you were after his females?

Crikey John I was 10 when you took this

FP4 ehh - I wonder how many folk would go out to shoot deer at 125ASA nowadays - my, how things have changed.

Nice to know part of the old boy lives in the warmth now!

Cracking John. I wasn't even born when you took this one!

I had a brown trouser moment with a big stag on Saturday, his eyes were almost as mad as Joeys! I had my back against impenetrable rhododendrons and had nowhere to go. So I stood up and waved my arms and made lots of noise at him, he backed off... luckily for me and my camera!

Nice to see the old photos, the methods have changed, but its still a cracking photo. :toast: :toast: :toast:

Nice expression! Not sure I like the mono feel to it but I guess in 1969 you did see too many photos like this?
