Thanks for the comments on my last post about continuous ink systems.
Another red deer photo, but I thought I'd post up a female to be a bit different! Taken in my local deer park on Saturday. I've been trying to get some wide-open shots with my new 300mm f/2.8 lens and 2x extender. I think the end results are very usable. There still is a difference in IQ at f/8, but it seems to be a big improvement over the old mk1 300mm f/2.8.
Techs: Canon 7D, EF300mm f/2.8 IS USM II lens, 2x extender III, tripod and gimbal head. f/5.6, 1/800th sec, ISO 400, aperture priority mode. Top and RHS cropped from original.
C's and c's welcome as always.

The 300 was a very versatile lens, works best at f8 with 2xTC though, presume the mkII is even better? Still, looks to be working up to spec

Thanks Neil. With the 1.4x TC mk3, wide open the new lens is fantastic, I've only used the 2x at f/8 as I was used to the old lens and erred on the side of caution initially. Looking at the wide-open shots, this new lens seems to be a big improvement even with the 2x (mk3 though), there is some IQ degradation as compared with f/8, but no way as bad as the old lens. Its probably because I use a crop sensor body though.
The main improvement for me is the weight, you can lug it about no problem, very handy when your chasing deer on the side of mountains!

The new lens looks like a winner, but then I have always thought the 300mm f2.8 was the best lens in either Canon's or Nikon's line up.
Paul interesting reading and a good learning points for me,i use the Nikon 300ml 2.8 with a 1.4 tc and think its great, your image certainly shows it works for you.
