Hello all, I am planning a trip out to Oregon on October 26th through the 31st to do a tour with Marc Adamus, but I am also staying for a week after the tour until November 8th to do some of my own exploring.I will be ending up in San Francisco. If you were to choose 2 or three places that you would visit along the Oregon coast going south from the Portland area, what would they be. I've seen pictures of many amazing places but I'm looking for some photographers input also. I will be seeing Seal Rock State Park, Depot Bay and Oceanside Beach on the tour so if you have other suggestions other than those, that would be great. Also, I've heard that many of the waterfalls in OR are dry, is that true? Thank you for your input ahead of time. Blessings, Deb

Have you tried referencing Greg Vaughn's book Photographing Oregon? I, too, did a solo trip to the Oregon coast and found his book to be most helpful.

There are a ton of great spots on the coast. In addition to the ones you mentioned, Cape Kiwanda offers a ton of possibilities, but I think Marc takes people there on almost all of his coast tours. Moving south from there towards San Fran other stops are Cape Perpetua, Bandon, and Samuel boardman state park.

Regardless, if you are starting your tour with Marc I would simply ask him where he would suggest you go. Marc is pretty helpful and will happily give you pointers on where to go after the tour ends. Also, if you are spending that much time on the coast already, you might want to head inline and try and catch some fall colors.

Thanks Amy and Scott. @ Amy I'm so glad you mentioned this cause I didn't know about the book. Thanks! @ Scott I'll be doing half the tour inland at the Columbia Gorge area and may spend a day or two more there. I will be traveling with an outdoorsy but non-photographer friend of mine and we both are wanting to do the coast. We will be going to Redwood National in CA. So much to see, so little time. I'm sure I will want to come back! I really want to see Thor's Well in Cape Perpetua. Have you been there? Thanks again! Blessings, Deb

Thanks for the plug, Amy! Glad you found the book helpful.

Debbie: I answered your similar question in your comment on my blog the other day with some suggestions for coast locations.

Thor's Well is a fascinating place and makes a great photo when conditions are right (it needs to have some relatively strong wave action at medium to high tide). As with other places on the coast, be very careful, watch out for "sneaker waves" and don't turn your back to the surf.

Haven't come back here in a while, so sorry your question sat for 10 days - yup I have been to Thor's well. As Greg mentioned, you need the right combo of waves and tides to have a good level of water flowing. On the filp side too many waves and you start to have some safety concerns at that spot. There is definitely a fine line there.
