D7000 300mm f4 ISO 400 1/400s at f7.1 handheld.
Driving along a loch and stopped to try for a shot of Little Grebe. About to get out of car and see otter swimming my way. Got down to shore amongst seaweed and waited for otter to swim past. Otter hears camera clicking and comes to investigate noise. Had to remove tele-converter as it came to within four metres! One of my best encounters with an otter for a very long time. All C+C warmly welcomed.

It is a bit tight in the frame, go back and do it again
My favourite subject! Everyone deserves a little luck sometimes but you have to be able to make the most of that luck. You certainly did on this one. Great viewpoint and no problem with it being big in frame as the eye contact is really what makes the picture. I'll bet the adrenalin was kicking in

Many thanks for your comments folks, much appreciated. The otter is big in frame but this is almost a full crop having only removed some of the green seaweed from the bottom of the image. At one point I thought he was going to come and sit on my lap as several times it got within the focusing distance of my lens!
Just re-visited this at home, having only seen it on a ropey monitor in work (it loked good even on that!!). On a better screen it is a fantastic shot Nick. Detail is superb, composition great and a brilliant subject. Love it.

Really great shot Nick. Superb lucky swine!
Technically great too and that's not luck.

Thanks again Robert!
Thanks Paul...it's funny I didn't get time to enjoy the encounter until afterwards cos' I was so busy concentrating on the otter, my camera settings and getting it not only in focus but actually in the viewfinder as it came closer and closer. I also have lots of frames that are just too tight and OOF but I am very pleased with the ones I managed to get and I will put a couple more on.
