Red Fox
Thanks for the comments on my last image!

A break from deer this time. There are several foxes on a golf course near me, and one of them is unbelievably approachable. It also enjoys picking up people's golf balls on the course! (Must get a shot of that one day... ) I found him (or her) yesterday, and followed it to the practice putting green, were it was sniffing around the bottom of a water fountain. I sat down about 8 metres from it, and was amazed to find that it came closer and closer until it was within a metre of me. Here's one of the shots. I was a bit restricted in the type of shot I could get as I only had a 200-400 so couldn't get any wide angle shots, and it was quite dark so was working with fairly low shutter speeds most of the time. Something to go back to though!

I'd be interested to know what you think of this. Does it work? Does it matter that I've cut the tops of the ears off? Cheers

Techs:
Nikon D300s
Nikon 200-400mm f4 VR
Handheld

1/320s
ISO 800

There are more shots on my blog if you're interested, as well as a video from my phone showing how close it was

Lucky little b***er....

To be honest it would have worked better in portrait, cut ears are never my thing. Or you could have taken 2 shots and stitched :) an AF lock button was made for doing that!

Not sure, were you at eye level as you appear to be looking down at it. Maybe me though. Agree with Neil re: portrait. Still a great encounter :toast: :toast: :toast:

I too think it has to be portrait, but still a lovely image, Oscar. The shots on your blog are also very good, Me thinks a superb series of shots is on the way

Agree with others on portrait as the cut ears look a little odd. Look forward to more foxy shots Oscar!

Oscar you are extremely fortunate to have such a co-operative fox as a subject and if I were you I'd be back there at every opportunity. I would have to say that this image doesn't work at all. Yes, the eyes are lovely but then if you are that close to a foxes eyes it will usually be the case. The composition for me (cut off ears, cut off legs) is all wrong but I suspect you already know that and as you rightly say ... "Something to go back to though!"... If Charlie is still playing ball when you return then I look forward to you posting the quality images we all know you are capable of. Good hunting.
