Red Tailed Hawk in Flight (c)
Took this yesterday whilst out training Suzie a female Red-Tailed Hawk. This is an awesome bird of prey with so much predatory instinct, basically a killing a machine!

This is a captive bred bird hence (c) in title but not her fault.

D2X - 400mm AFS, tripod mounted
ISO 200, F2.8, 1/750sec
Conditions were very overcast hence the F2.8 to try & keep the shutter speed up.

I went out with a suzie once and she was a man eater-Must be something in the name,The focusing is spot on and the upturned wing tips make the image :toast:

Hi Vince

Captive or not a great shot - super BG and as Dave says the wing tips add to the image!

Hi Vince

Excellent flight shot, the exact side-on viewpoint, and the wing position, and the sharpness, and the background, are all spot-on and your panoramic crop is ideal.

Great technique too to keep the lens on the bird and get such good head sharpness at f2.8

cheers

You can feel the build up for the next power stroke, excellant. Love the pin sharp head and blur in the wing tips.

Excellent stuff Vince, everything is right for a flight shot, overcast light can produce that certain glow that you have here.

The fact that the upperside of the wing is visible and the slight upturn to them really make this.
