Another from Bryce
This was a mid-day shot, but I liked the brilliance of the orange formations and the blue sky. I took several of this dusty ridge with this highly recognizable feature, some with the snag to the right, some vertical without it. Let me know if you think this is an interesting composition.

The snag is a bit distracting for me but not as much as the tree to the left of the formation. I like the composition well enough without either of the two, especially if you'd moved the frame to the left placing the formation to the lower right corner. They just don't contribute enough to the scene to be included in this particular comp. That said, I think this turned out very well for a midday exposure. If it were mine I'd bring up the local contrast more and increase the vibrance, then sharpen it slightly too. I've prepared an example to illustrate this....say the word and I will take it down if you'd like

I agree with Pam for the most part however I could live with the tree on the left, but the tree on the right distracts. Without those nice cirrus clouds not sure this one works.

Thanks Kane and Pam.. And no need to take your redo down. I like it! The snag is what first caught my attention...it seemed like it was mimicking the formation, but having three subjects (that's the problem, ins't it?) does create some messiness. let me play with a vertical I have, and if it's worth it, I'll share it here.

Here is a vertical crop without the snag. Let me know if it's better, but I'm thinking the approach in general wasn't ideal. Gotta go back for the milky way and crescent moon, or something ;-).

Oh, and I'll sharpen more if I do anything with it.

I kinda liked that snag, but wasn't crazy about the monolith being dead center. The vertical fixes that, so that's my choice.
Could use a bit more 'development', IMO. I really like the folds of earth in the foreground. Nice way to frame this subject!

Personally i prefer the original (first post). Pam's repost looks oversharpened on my monitor. I think the comp works just fine, im ok with all the trees; my only issue is with processing; the sky is too bold/saturated and overpowers the rocks, which should stand out more--i would desaturate the sky (blue/cyan) and saturate the rocks (orange/yellow) just a bit. A B&W is another option. :wavey:

Thanks, Stan. I didn't do anything to the sky, but I do find sometimes those clear, higher elevation skies need to be toned down from what the camera naturally captures.
