I got home a couple hours ago from a long weekend in the desert. Headed to Moab after work Friday with my new camera in hand and a hankering to do some night sky shooting. I spent a couple hours at Balanced Rock in Arches making exposures. I just wish the moon had been a little closer to a new moon. Kind of tough to see the Milky Way when the moon is around.

And if you missed fall colors in Colorado, the cottonwoods in Utah are en fuego!

I even made it to Bisti for a couple hours of hiking/shooting Sunday afternoon. I got no earthly idea where to find the eggs so I just wandered around in circles looking at the textures and shapes.

Well, the moon may have trumped the Milky Way, but I like how it lit the rock so naturally, and there are plenty of stars!
I also like the backlit cottonwood tree. Cropping an inch from the bottom to the bottom of the dead tree on the left looks better, IMO.
Next time you visit the Bisti, take along this map and a GPS unit.

Moon or no moon, the Balance Rock photo is very nice! How do you like the new camera?

@John, thanks for the map. I actually have this on the hard drive of my laptop but this was a computerless trip and I had no intention of going to Bisti when I left home. I justified it by saying "I'm a smart guy, I remember how to find the stuff." Just goes to show you, the mind really is the first thing to go.
@Bob, The new camera worked out well. The combination of higher ISO and noise reduction was great for night sky shooting. And I really like the articulated LCD screen. I shot some macro stuff pretty close to the ground and it was very helpful not having to lay down on my belly in the cactus patch. I had a brief conversation with Bret Edge at his gallery and we both agree, every DSLR should have the articulated screen.
