That's an interesting read, from what I can gather from it since we used neither Flicker nor agencies. Licensing is where it's at income-wise for photos used in ads and so much more.

We made a huge portion of our income from licensing our photos. Check out fotoQuote, our principal source in negotiating licensing fees, for an indication of what's at stake. I never figured out an average, but for every $1k we charged in shooting fees on our commercial shoots, we could garner additional annual license fees of somewhere between $2k and $5k, depending on the spectrum of usage. Some could go higher, but others could be lower.

The onus is on the photographer however, to monitor licenses and either renew or cancel and the end of the licensed period. We used it as an opportunity for repeat business, contacting clients 90 days before termination and offering to renegotiate for a subsequent year or shoot again for new images to "refresh" their image. The latter was priceless. But you also had to be sure that they didn't continue using your photos when the contract period expired.

The whole licensing deal makes you keep a VERY good calendar. :toast:
