UPDATE: May 2013:
Based on the list of wonderful suggestions we've received from you the members in this topic, we've planned a list of upcoming themes for everyone to keep in mind when shooting outdoors over the next few months or organizing their image archives. Our upcoming themes are:
June 2013 - Plains, Prairies & Grasslands
July - Avian/Birds
August - Colorado ("Colorado Day" celebrating statehood is on Aug. 1)
September - The Road Less Traveled
October - Backyard Photos
November - Fall Color Contest
December - Silhouettes & Shadows
January 2014 - "Unique" Images
February - Time Lapse
Hope you enjoy the themes for months to come, and keep the suggestions coming!
Original Post 11-2012:
Our monthly theme will return in December. The next Home Page cover photo will be the winners of the contest.
In the meantime, we're offering a sneak peek at some of our possible upcoming themes to give you advance time to plan, shoot and post images for them. Some ideas we've had so far include:
Time Lapse
Telephoto Landscapes
The Desert Bloom
The Monsoon Sky
Summer in the Mountains
The Power of Wind
Solitude
On the Edge
We're also looking for fresh perspectives on new themes. What others would you like to add to the list or participate in? Please reply with your ideas here. We want to see your suggestions! - Adam, Jack, and Josh
As possible future subjects, I'm wondering about some of the different landforms/environments of the Rockies. We often see pictures of "Mountains" and "Canyons"; perhaps something of "plains/grasslands", "lakes", "forests", "tundra", or similar?
Although this is mostly a landscape forum, it would be nice to give it a heartbeat. Occasional wildlife themes like migrations, prairie wildlife (most Coloradoans live on the prairie), seasonal wildlife, animals in their habitat, songbirds, raptors, backyard wildlife... would be great. I'd also like to see some emphasis on strong captioning that tells the viewer something about the creature, where they live, behavior, conservation status. Thanks for asking for suggestions!

I second Dave (and Mark's) suggestions.

I like Mark & Dave's suggestions. Good ones from the mods, as well. Thanks, gents!

Well, I think we did New Mexico and Arizona, but I don't think we've done the others?

Lots of great suggestions from all of you! We do plenty of subject or location based themes, but I'd love to see more themes based on emotions and concepts!
Dave...that's a great idea. We may mostly be a landscape forum, but wildlife is part of nature and we are the Rocky Mountain Nature Photographers. Perhaps if we schedule it far enough in the future we can give those members that don't typically shoot wildlife a chance to capture a few shots in time for the theme.
Morris...you are correct, we did New Mexico and Arizona. They were chosen because they were both celebrating their state centennials. I think we could find room for the other states at some point. Thanks for the suggestion.

A friend of mine who visits this forum periodically suggested a couple ideas:
Having the dominant element in a scene be:
Shadows
Reflections

Lots of great ideas here...we may need to go to weekly themes! Keep 'em coming!

Here's a few ideas:
"Overcoming Difficulties" A shot of something that was difficult to shoot. With the image, explain how you overcame the difficulties by using a different technique or coming back time and again, etc.
"Unique Images" It's almost impossible to capture anything truly unique in nature with so many photos having been taken. But I think a theme of photos that are rather original and rarely been shot would be interesting.
